Grammy Awards Recap

Last night was the biggest day in music, the pinnacle of them all – The Grammy Awards. Let’s take a closer look at some of the most coveted awards, which winners deserved to win and which losers got snubbed 💿

Let’s start off with Best Rap Album - always one of the most controversial awards. This year the five finalists were God Did by DJ Khaled, I Never Liked You by Future, Come Home The Kids Miss You by Jack Harlow, Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers by Kendrick Lamar and It’s Almost Dry by Pusha T, with Kendrick taking home the award. Here’s my quick analysis on the nominees 👇

  • I believe anyone could’ve made an insanely strong case for Pusha here. Push gave us a cohesive project with insane production from Pharrell and Kanye that included some of my favorite tracks he’s ever made; and as a standalone project, it exemplifies greatness

  • Now with Jack, here’s where it gets tricky. I honestly thought the academy was going to give him this one. This album did numbers, had insane mainstream appeal with some real good rapping sprinkled in and truly catapulted Jack into another league of stardom. He’s the industry’s golden child right now and I truly wouldn’t have been surprised if he won

  • And as for Future and Khaled, while both of their projects were great in their own regard, I don’t think they were album of the year worthy. Ultimately, I do believe the academy got this one right (for once) for one main reason. This album offered the perfect balance of backpack hip hop nerdism and mainstream music appeal. I mean, just listen to the difference between We Cry Together and Die Hard. All of these albums are great, but all things considered, none of these albums stack up against Kendrick’s and the best album did in fact win 🏆

Now I want to talk about Best R&B Album because there was some controversy surrounding this award. The nominees for this award were Breezy by Chris Brown, Candy Drip by Lucky Daye, Good Morning Gorgeous by Mary J Blige, Watch The Sun by PJ Morton and Black Radio III by Robert Glasper, with Robert Glasper taking home the award đź‘€

And guess who was absolutely fuming and took to the internet to be immature and blast hate? Chris Brown

C’mon Chris - this is just disrespectful and embarrassing. First of all, you HAVE to know who Robert Glasper is, especially as someone who’s been in the industry for as long as you have been. He’s one of the most legendary artists in music 🙏

  • Second, for as great as your album was, you have to be able to acknowledge other good music when you hear it. His album was INSANE and he was able to bring together so many amazing people to create one smooth, cohesive body of work

  • And lastly (and most importantly), since when is the Grammy Awards the end of all be all seal of approval for you? Breezy was one of the better albums in your discography (in my humble opinion), it debuted at #4 on the Top-100 and had five songs chart in the Top-100. Chris did apologize (see here), but still a weak move

Let's move on though. Easily the highlight of the night was the 13 minute long 50 Year Anniversary of Hip Hop performance that featured pretty much everybody. Here's the full video, skip to 7 minutes in if you're a Busta Rhymes fan 🎤

Lastly, here’s 5 songs you need in your rotation ASAP 👇
