Detroit Is Now On Streaming
Just a few weeks ago, Big Sean celebrated the 10th anniversary of his mixtape, Detroit, by making it available on all digital streaming platforms. Since its release, many long-time Sean supporters have deemed this as his best work, given its originality, lyrical content and star studded feature list (J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Wiz Khalifa, Wale, Jhené Aiko, etc.) 🗣
But for years, this mixtape, along with numerous other blog era classics, was inaccessible to those who primarily relied on popular DSPs (Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal, etc.) for their music consumption. So I’m using this section of the newsletter as a PSA. Artists and the rest of the music industry need to figure out a way to make these classic bodies of work available on streaming platforms for the masses to hear 🎧
Big Sean released his fourth mixtape ‘Detroit’ 10 years ago today.
What is your favorite record on this project?

Some artists have already been able to make this happen - Lil Wayne with Sorry 4 The Wait, Chance The Rapper with Acid Rap and Mac Miller with Faces – but still so many remain unavailable. The world deserves to hear J. Cole’s Friday Night Lights and Fabolous’s The S.O.U.L. Tape Series at its own leisure. These mixtapes, and this era in hip hop in general, are so important and their significance must be highlighted to the world 🌎

Mac Miller's Alter Egos
You obviously know Mac Miller - one of the most important artists of our generation. The places from which he drew inspiration stretched wide, and as a result so did the sounds that he created 🧠

But did you know that the Mac Miller we all know and love so much was really an amalgamation of alter egos which allowed him to express his range and creativity? Let me walk you through them all 👇
First we have Easy Mac, which was Mac before the fame. This is pre-K.I.D.S. and Best Day Ever. Just a teenage Malcolm showing off his live for hip-hop and rap music
Next, we have Larry Fisherman. Larry was producer Mac, who was known for his musical experimentation. This style was highlighted on his instrumental mixtape, Run On Sentences Vol. 1
After that, we have Larry Lovestein. This lesser known alter ego showcased Mac’s infatuation with jazz music. With this alter ego, he created a fictional band The Velvet Revival and released an EP You in 2012. Peep the title track here
Lastly, we have Delusional Thomas. This alter ego allowed Mac to express a darker and more demonic side. And in 2013, he dropped a melancholy and distorted self-titled mixtape
If you watched all four of these Mac videos, I love you. Now here’s five new songs you need in your rotation ASAP 🚨

Playlist here as always, enjoy your week fam 💜
