Last Friday, Brent Faiyaz dropped a surprise album Larger Than Life. Letās take a dive into the album so I can share my thoughts š
Itās been a little over a year since Brentās last release, Wasteland, which is still atop my rotation. Over the past two months, heās dropped two singles ā Moment of Your Life with Coco Jones in August and WY@ in September. But last Thursday evening, he announced his surprise project, Larger Than Life š

This project once again solidifies Brent as one of the most prolific independent R&B artists out right now, who is in a league of his own. Hereās my 2 biggest takeaways from the album š
First, his progression and consistency as an artist. This is Brentās fourth major release and you can tell he is clearly growing as an artist and experimenting with his sound with each project. For the most part, Brent has always had a rather new-age, atmospheric R&B sound, but with this project, he is able to blend a nostalgic 90ās/early 2000ās sound into his signature sound. For example, the intro track, Timās Intro, contains hard hitting Timbaland drums behind a seamless sample of TLCās No Scrubs and Brent finds a way to overlay his vocals beautifully onto this track. This is just one of the many examples of this throughout the project
My second takeaway is Brentās role as a curator and collaborator. Brent is one of the few artists on the planet who can work with legendary legacy artists just as easily as he can work with newer underground artists. And he takes great pride in doing so with the multitude of artists who come from the musical hotbed of the DMV area. From Timbaland to Missy Elliot to Tommy Richman, the DMV has an immense footprint on this album and it was also refreshing to hear Brent work with a variety of other artists like A$AP Rocky, Babyface Ray and Coco Jones
All in all, I am beyond thrilled with this release and foresee this being in rotation for a long time. Brent never ceases to amaze me with his sound, collaborations and growth as an artist š§

One of my favorite new artists - mynameisntjmack - just pulled up for the sixth installment of the Sound Cypher. He literally skated over one of my favorite beats of all-time, Coffee Bean by Travis Scott. Check out part one here š£
