🎷 R&B Is Not Dead

Just over a year ago, Diddy had some pretty controversial remarks about the state of R&B. But with major players like SZA, Brent Faiyaz, and many more consistently dropping omnipotent music, I can confidently say that R&B is in better shape now than it's ever been. And Diddy just contributed in a big way by dropping his first solo album since 2006 featuring a star-studded roster 💿 (2 min read)

R&B Is Not Dead

Remember when Diddy insinuated that R&B and set the internet ablaze? 😶

In my humble opinion, this was an absolutely heinous tweet and many other major players in the game agreed 👇

How could R&B be dead when we have acts like SZA, Summer Walker, Brent Faiyaz, 6LACK, Ari Lennox, PARTYNEXTDOOR, Kehlani, Jhené Aiko continuing to churn out culturally impactful music on a routine basis? Well, rest assured because contrary to Diddy’s belief, R&B is not dead - in fact, it is alive, well and thriving. And Diddy just contributed with the release of his first solo album since 2006, The Love Album: Off The Grid, which was released through Love Records (Diddy’s new R&B focused label) and Motown 🤝

This album is absolutely STAR-STUDDED and has some interesting storylines embedded in it. Let’s start off with some legends – The Dream, Mary J. Blige & Jazmine Sullivan put on unbelievable vocal performances on Brought My Love, I Like and Need Somebody respectively. Diddy also brought back the widely beloved R&Bieber with Moments which almost sounds like a live jazz ballad 🎷

And the most interesting storyline of them all, is that Another One Of Me marks the last time The Weeknd will ever be featured on another artist’s track unless Daft Punk reunites 😢

Aside from all that, there were some great moments from newcomers NOVA WAV and Nija. And, all in all, I was thoroughly pleased with the album 👏

Ian Jackson Came Through

I recently had the 5-star University of North Carolina commit and Overtime Elite’s very own, Ian Jackson in the studio and I put his music knowledge to the test. We played an amazing game of Can You Guess The Sample and Ian went 2/4. Can you beat his score?
