Hip-Hop's Craziest Day Ever 🗓

10 years ago this month we saw one of the most historic days in hip-hop history. Kanye, Mac Miller and J. Cole all dropped projects on the same exact day, and each turned out to be critical to their career resumes. Let's relive this historic day together and appreciate how insane this truly was. Plus, I have some new projects you gotta listen to 💿 (3 min read)

10 Years Later

June 18th, 2013 was truly one of the most historic days in hip-hop history. But first, let’s rewind to a little more than a month before that - May 2, 2013. At 8:04am, Kanye West published a Tweet that sent shock waves through the music world that read - “June Eighteen” - which marked the official announcement of his critical album Yeezus 👏

Later that day, Mac Miller also published a Tweet announcing the release date for his next album, Watching Movies With The Sound Off, which would coincidentally drop the same day as Kanye 👀

These two tweets set the scene for a marquee drop day battle…but this was only the beginning. Just two weeks later, J. Cole also let the world know he’d be moving up the release date of his upcoming album, Born Sinner, one week to what day you may ask? You got it – June 18, 2013 😅

And thus, the stage was set. Three of the biggest artists in the genre were all dropping albums on the same exact day, and the storylines surrounding each artist’s release were intriguing to say the least. Kanye hadn’t dropped a solo project in three years. How would he follow up his magnum opus, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, which many fans believe is a top album in hip-hop history 🐐

As for Mac, how would he follow up Blue Slide Park, which was the first independent album to go #1 in music history?

And don’t forget about Cole, whose debut studio album, Cole World: The Sideline Story, got lukewarm reactions from early supporters, but had just released a strong debut single for his new album, Power Trip, which was wildly successful and showed his growth as an artist 🔥

And on top of this, Cole was now going toe to toe with the protegê of his mentor, Jay-Z. Well, as many of you know, all three albums were wildly successful and critical projects in each of these artist’s respective catalogs. And for those who are curious, in terms of the album sales from most to least, the order went Kanye, J. Cole and Mac Miller 💿

But I say all that to say this – it’s officially been 10 years since that historic day, which is CRAZY! And to celebrate the 10 year anniversary, Mac Miller’s estate released a deluxe version of the album with four bonus tracks that didn’t make the original cut, which feature Tyler, The Creator and Earl Sweatshirt 🗣

I hope you enjoy these new tracks as much as I did! Up next we have an interview I’m super excited about. For those of you who don’t know, Sol ChYld (New Jersey native) is one of the brightest new female MCs and you need to get familiar with her ASAP! 😮‍💨

I’ve recently highlighted her amazing track, NBC, but guess what? She recently pulled up to the studio - peep the first video and watch me put her sample knowledge to the test. Also, keep your eyes peeled for an EXCLUSIVE FREESTYLE she dropped live on the show! 🤝
