One Of Hip Hop's Most Iconic Sounds 🐿
Ever heard of the chipmunk soul sample? Artists such as Kanye, Jay-Z and more have been using this technique since the early 2000s. Plus, JID has an album loading which I really need. Let's break it down 🥁 (3 min read)

New Album Loading
Dreamville’s golden child, JID, is gearing up for his new album, The Forever Story, which is expected to drop August 26th. This upcoming album is the sequel to his debut project, The Never Story, which released back in 2017 🗣
Surround Sound ft. 21 Savage & Baby Tate served as the first single to the album, which dropped back in January, but last week, Jiddy JID followed that up with his second single, Dance Now ft. Kenny Mason. Give it a listen 👇
One cool note to point out, notice the album cover art for both albums? You can definitely see the consistency there 🎨

Mariah & The Chipmunks
The chipmunk soul sample is one of hip hop’s most signature sounds. For those who don’t know, this sound occurs when a producer finds a chunk of an old soul record with vocals attached, chops it up and speeds up the tempo to make the vocal portion sound incredibly high pitched. Here's an example, you'll know what I mean 💿
Popularized in the early 2000s by Kanye, Just Blaze, and the Heatmakers, this technique shaped a sound synonymous with Roc-A-Fella Records. Take an in depth look at Mariah Carey explaining one of my all time favorite examples of this technique 👇
Here’s some of the best examples of chipmunk soul sample beats you need in your rotation 🎧
As always, I've added a few of these tracks to my running playlist of sounds discussed in this newsletter. Enjoy ❤️
